5 ways to check the freshness of eggs

We’ve all had that moment of doubt in front of the fridge about the freshness of the eggs. Luckily, there are quick and easy tricks to check if they’re still good without breaking them.

We’ve all experienced that moment of doubt in front of the refrigerator: are these eggs still good or should we throw them away? Since the shell hides everything, it’s hard to know without cracking them open. However, there are several very simple tricks to check their freshness in just a few seconds. And some of the methods are truly surprising.

The water test: the most well-known method

This is the simplest and quickest technique. Simply place the egg in a bowl of cold water and observe what happens.

If it stays flat at the bottom: it’s very fresh.
If it rises slightly: it’s still edible.
If it floats: it’s no longer good.

Why? Over time, air enters the egg through the shell. The more air there is, the higher the egg floats. This is therefore an excellent indicator of freshness.
